HEAVY METALS IN SELECTED CLAY DEPOSITS FROM WIELKOPOLSKA

Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2010, Vol 439, Issue 439

Abstract

Concentration of heavy metals in clay deposits in Wielkopolska area was studied, where the upper part of “Poznañ Clays” are exploited. Chemical analyses were made using INAA and ICP-MS. The contents of Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni and Cr in studied clays are generally typical for clay sediments and UCC (Upper Continental Crust). Zn, Cd, Cu and V concentrations are higher in fine fractions (φ <2 μm and φ <0.2 μm) than in whole samples. Distribution of metals in red clays and in fine fractions of sediments is controled mainly through chemical weathering processes.
