Heavy rainfall in the Aegean Region

Journal Title: İzmir Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2021, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

The study area is the Aegean Region, one of the geographical regions of Turkey. There are 8 provinces in the region covering the western part of Turkey. In this study, which examined the precipitation characteristics and heavy rains throughout the Aegean region, 35 station data were used, with altitudes ranging from 3 m. to 1063 m. The data received from the stations covers the period of 1975-2018. Based on the criteria determined in the precipitation intensity classification applied by the Turkish State Meteorological Service, 43 years of data were processed and the number of rainy days belonging to these classes was determined. The determined statistics of the data were defined within the scope of the study. The non-parametric Mann-Kendall (M-K) rank correlation coefficient method was used to evaluate the variability in the data and to understand the nature and magnitude of the variability. In the Aegean Region, the intensity of precipitation decreases from the coasts to the interior part. In the coastal Aegean Region, where there is a lot of maritime influence, high heavy rains occur more than in the interior. In the inner Aegean, where altitude and continentality increase, the intensity of precipitation is often lower in this area. Afyon and its surroundings are one of the areas with the least precipitation in the Aegean Region. The inner part of the Region, the intensity of the precipitation occur less frequently. In the mountainous area in the south of the region, precipitation occurs as more intense. The most extreme precipitation is experienced in the southern part of the Region. In addition, the south part is experienced with the highest total precipitation in the Aegean Region. 100 mm and above precipitation are noticeably more than in the rest of the Aegean Region.
