Hemoptysis – cancer or pulmonary embolism?

Journal Title: OncoReview - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Oncological patients are a group at risk of venous thromboembolism. Hemoptysis may occur as an element of pulmonary embolism, as well as a result of malignancy. Hemoptysis always requires urgent and unequivocal diagnostic evaluation, but differentiation between cancer and pulmonary embolism is particularly important. Management is totally different and selection of the wrong option might have fatal consequences. The manuscript provides some hopefully useful suggestions of managing hemoptysis where oncology and cardiovascular diseases overlap.
