Henryk Pobożny – „on święty polski”
Journal Title: Studia Salvatoriana Polonica - Year 2017, Vol 11, Issue
Abstract
The memory of Duke Henry II the Pious is still alive. He is surrounded by worship as a martyr who gave his life in defense of the faith, when he defied Tartar hordes from the East in the battle of Legnica (9th April 1241). Why is he considered a Saint? Do we know the exact circumstances of the Prince’s death and is there evidence that he died a martyr’s death in defence of the faith in Christ? The above article is devoted to these issues. It discusses the concept of Poland as a bulwark of Christianity, the idea which was born during the battle on the fields of Legnica, it also presents the history of efforts to exalt Henry the Pious to the glory of altars, and in addition, you can find many references to the relationship between Henry and his mother, Saint Hedwig of Silesia.
