Hippocampus, hippocampal sclerosis and epilepsy.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2013, Vol 65, Issue 3
Abstract
Hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is considered one of the major pathogenic factors of drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy. HS is characterized by selective loss of pyramidal neurons - especially of sectors CA1 and CA3 of the hippocampus - pathological proliferation of interneuron networks, and severe glia reaction. These changes occur in the course of long-term and complex epileptogenesis. The authors, on the basis of a review of the literature and own experience, present the pathomechanisms leading to hippocampal sclerosis and epileptogenesis, including various morphological and functional elements of this structure of the brain and pharmacological possibilities of preventing these processes.

Infection and atherosclerosis. An alternative view on an outdated hypothesis.
Already at the beginning of the 20th century, a potential role for microbes in vascular diseases was suggested. However, not until the late '70 of that century, much attention has been paid to this infection hypothesis....
Potential hepato-protective effect of α-tocopherol or simvastatin in aged rats.
Background: The effect of α-tocopherol or simvastatin treatment on antioxidant defense in liver of old rats was investigated. Methods: Endogenous thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and total nitrite/nitrate...
Influence of the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, sildenafil, on antidepressant-like activity of magnesium in the forced swim test in mice.
Magnesium, which acts as an antagonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) subtype of glutamate receptors, exerts antidepressant-like activity in animal models of depression. The present study was undertaken to elucidate the...
Activation of the NMDA/glutamate receptor complex antagonizes the NMDA antagonist-induced antidepressant-like effects in the forced swim test.
The antidepressant activity of NMDA receptor antagonists has been demonstrated, and their mechanism of action was based on the assumption of their selectivity for the NMDA receptor only. However, no direct evidence for t...
Inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 protects against amyloid beta peptide-evoked memory impairment in mice.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) results in an impairment of memory and behavior. It is accepted that amyloid beta (Abeta) peptides are responsible for the etiopathology of AD, but the precise signaling pathways leading to the d...
