Histopathological study to establish the association of gallstones with cholecystitis and carcinoma of gallbladder
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Majority of such specimens will show the rather mundane changes associated with chronic cholecystitis, a minority will harbour a highly lethal carcinoma. Radical resections of the gallbladder and adjacent liver bed are performed when such cancers are suspected pre-operatively. Such tumors must be accurately classified and staged to provide optimal prognostic information Methodology: After studying the gross features, representative areas were sampled for histopathological examination. At least three tissue samples were taken from each specimen, so as to include tissue from fundus, body and neck of the gallbladder. Extra bits were taken from other representative areas like polyps, growth and other abnormal sites whenever necessary. The tissue was processed routinely to obtain paraffin sections of 5 micron thickness. They were stained with haematoxylin and eosin for microscopy. Special stains like PAS and Alcian blue (Ph 2.5) were done wherever necessary. Results: Among 220 cases, 130 cases were diagnosed histologically as chronic calculus cholecystitis followed by 34 chronic acalculuscholecystitis, ten follicular cholecystitis, four gangrenous cholecystitis, three xanthogranulomatouscholecystitis, one eosinophiliccholecystitis, two acute cholecystitis, 14 acute on chronic cholecystitis, two cholelithiasis, six cholesterolosis, four adenomyomatous hyperplasia of gallbladder, one each mucous gland polyp, cholesterol polyp and adenoma, four carcinoma and three normal gallbladder which were sent along with Choledochal cyst excision. Conclusion: Abnormal mucosal changes was associated with gallbladder disease other than cholecystitis and was statistically significant
