Historical Development and Properties of Platelet Concentrates in Dentistry

Journal Title: Cumhuriyet Dental Journal - Year 2018, Vol 21, Issue 2

Abstract

Platelets are playing a very important role in wound healing and hemostasis and are among the potential cells of regenerative therapy due to the growth factors and cytokines they contain. This has increased the interest in platelet and platelet concentrates in regenerative therapy. Various platelet concentrates from the past to the present day were obtained, and when these products were used alone or in combination with other biomaterials, positive contributions to the healing process were observed. When platelet concentrates are used in surgical procedures involving hard and soft tissue, they provide controlled release of intense cytokines and growth factors in their contents. This situation is accelerating the natural wound healing process. In addition, they are the most important advantages because they do not cause any immunological reaction and infection since they are autogenous. When whole blood is centrifuged at different cycle and different times, platelet derived products with different contents are obtained. Looking at the products such as PRP, PRGF, PRF and CGF, it is seen that each newly discovered product has more advanced characteristics than the previous one. The aim of review;  platelet concentrate's such as PRP, PRGF, PRF, CGF give information about the historical development and properties.
