Historical-geographical study of Kyiv residential areas connectivity by light rail transport in XX-XXI centuries
Journal Title: Економічна та соціальна географія - Year 2016, Vol 76, Issue
Abstract
Public transport system occupies an extremely important place in city functioning. Primarily this refers to large capital cities. Light rail (tram) transport played an important role in the development of Kyiv spatial limits. The purpose of the study was to analyse the development of the light rail (tram) transport network in Kyiv for the period of its modern history, as well as perspectives of its development till 2025. To investigate the development the light rail (tram) transport network in Kyiv, the author applied graph method together with the method of historical-geographical cross-sections. Residential areas, i.e. dwelling districts and neighbourhoods, were considered as vertices of the graph. Historical-geographical analysis evidenced that the connectivity of Kyiv residential areas by light rail from its establishment in 1892 to the post-war period was actively growing and developing. The maximum provision of residential areas with light rail (tram) transport peaked at 78% in 1913. With the start of trolleybus network and underground railway system (Kyiv Metro), tram ceases to be the dominant mode of transport but continued to keep an important position in public conveyance. In 1985 the tram network reached its highest level of development, but provision of residential areas with tram transport reduced to 47%. The tram survived a transition to an additional transport mean driving passengers to Metro. Since Ukrainian independence, the tram network has entered the stage of active involution and split into the two independent parts, the Right Bank and the Left Bank, while tram ways were dismantled in the central part of Kyiv. The provision of residential areas with tram transport reached a minimum value of 38%. The Kyiv Master Plan 2025 keeps the status of tram as additional transport mean; however, the document puts on the back burner the development of a tram network. Restoring the connection of the two banks by tram transport in the future is not planned.
