Hot Spot Cell Load Balancing

Abstract

Cellular network has undergone explosive growth in terms of number of subscribers in last couple of decades. Today billions of people around the world use mobile telephones, penetrating around 60 % of global population. The increased numbers of subscribers are supported by limited frequency bandwidth. The bandwidth in Wireless Cellular network is represented by number of channels. Numbers of channels available with any network are very limited and hence effective use of channels is a most critical phenomenon for success of the network. Many channel allocation schemes have proposed till date, which can be categorized as Fixed Channel Allocation, Dynamic Channel Allocation or Hybrid Channel Allocation schemes based on their nature of allocation of channels. In a Fixed Channel allocation scheme channels are permanently allocated to cells irrespective of traffic present. In Dynamic Channel Allocation scheme channels are allocated to the cells on demand as requested by the cell. However very frequent channel switching may increase call initiation time. In Hybrid Channel Allocation schemes some of the channels are fixed and some of them are collected in central pool accessed by Mobile Switching Center (MSC). If cell do not have any fixed channel to serve a new call request then it borrows some channels from global pool through MSC. This paper proposes a novel proactive mechanism to allocate channels from global pool using multilevel hot-spot notification. The novelty of this work lies in effective sharing of global pool of channels to cells which may require the additional channels in future. Thus the proactive nature of the algorithm reduces the call blocking probability along with the minimal channel switching overheads.
