HYDROCARBONS IN THE WATER OF BAY OF GDANSK
Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 1992, Vol 19, Issue 1
Abstract
The paper presents results of hydrocarbon determinations in waters of the Bay of Gdansk, performed in the period 1987- 1991. During that time 15 series of measurements on 59 stations have been realized. The stations were located in the coastal, nearshore and deepwater zones of the Bay. The hydrocarbons were determined by · the spectrofluorescency method after extraction with dichloromethane (or carbon tetrachloride). Significant differences in the degree of hydrocarbon pollution of the investigated zones and parts of the Bay of Gdmisk were observed. Highest hydrocarbon pollution is in the coastal and nearshore zones of the central part of the Bay. The inner Puck Bay shows certain autonomy of pollution, resulting from partial isolation from the rest of the Gdansk Bay, and from high productivity level. Pollution of the east part of the Bay of Gdansk is low. This results from its position relative to sources of hydrocarbons, and from the possibility of mixing of the waters of the Bay with inflowing sea water. The average multiannual hydrocarbon level in the Bay of Gdansk indicates strong pollution, typical for sea basins adjacent to municipal and port areas.
