HYPERONYMS AND HYPONYMS IN TERMINOLOGY (linguistic status, formation and types of paradigms)
Journal Title: Наукові записки Національного університету "Острозька академія" Серія "Філологія" - Year 2017, Vol 68, Issue 68
Abstract
The purpose of the article is to determine the status and categorical features of the phenomenon of hyper-hyponymy in terminology, to find out the peculiarities of the formation and structure of hyper-hyponymic paradigms of terms. The material of the research is one of the largest and most ancient terminology systems of the Ukrainian language, e. g., terminology of water management. Hypero-hyponymic relations are fundamental paradigmatic semantic relations, with the help of which modern terminology is structured, and if synonymous and antonymic bundles combine only a part of the terms, then the hyperhyponymic relations cover the entire terminology. The branching of hyper-hyponymic paradigms of terms in different periods of formation and development of terminology of water management is due to various reasons: 1) the thoroughness of research of scientific concepts; 2) the ontological properties of nominated objects; 3) the importance of the semantic feature, which is the basis for the classification of terms; 4) the number of classification marks. We distinguish hyper-hyponymic groups with parallel, sequential and combined structures. The most common in the terminology of water management are hyper-hyponymic paradigms with combined structures, in which the subgroups of specific names are combined in parallel and sequential bonds. The logic-semantic subordination of scientific concepts that forms the hyper-hyponymic groups is realized in two types of relationships between generic and specific names: 1) actually semantic; 2) formally-semantic. Hyper-hyponymy makes terminology of water management systematic and contributes to its continuous development and improvement.
