Hyperreality and Simulacra in Saved by Edward Bond and The Vertical Hour by David Hare: a Baudrillardian Reading

Journal Title: Journal of Science and today’s world - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 12

Abstract

The present study examines hyperreality and simulacra in Saved by Edward Bond and The Vertical Hour by David Hare based on Baudrillard’s ideas. Baudrillard believes that in consumer society today there are no longer natural needs that human work strives to satisfy. Rather there are culturally produced hyperreal needs that are generated to provide work and profit. This study is a library study in terms of data collection and an analytical study in terms of data analysis. In Bond’s Saved it is found that TV contents are examples of hyperreality. However, the significant thing is that human morality is turned into hyperreality. The child is just the product of her mother’s sexual intercourse and morality and responsibility becomes eliminated in the play. And the characters’ human morality is just a notion without referent; it is a simulacrum. In The Vertical Hour by David Hare the hyperreality is highly present in the form of propaganda for war through media. Even Nadia’s student falls in love with her because he has seen her in the hyperreality in television and media and thus politicians use hyperreality to influence people and start a war.
