Ideal dentist profile defined by children and adolescents

Abstract

Introduction: The patient-dentist relationship is an important factor  that influences the development of dental appointment and consequently  the oral health condition. Objective: To analyze the perceptions of children and adolescents regarding the ideal dentist. Material and methods: Descriptive study with primary data collection through the free word association test, using the expression ideal dentist for me as the prompt. The target audience of this study was comprised of primary school students (5th to 8th grades) enrolled in three public schools within the urban area of a municipal district in the mid-west region of Santa Catarina. The non-probabilistic sample was composed of 967 students with mean age of 11.9 years. Data analysis was based on the Bardin's content analysis. Two categories were created to code the messages: Personal characteristics and professional characteristics.The personal characteristics category included expressions regarding interpersonal relationship, while the professional characteristics category included expressions regarding training/competence. Results:The personal characteristics category was the most cited (79.41%) for both male and female. The most common expressions to describe the ideal dentist were ‘friendly’ (32.7%) for personal characteristics category and ‘responsible’ (13.43%) for professional characteristics category.Conclusion: Regardless of gender, for the people who participated in this research the concept of an ideal dentist is linked to a humanized care, in which the professional listens to the patient in a qualified way.
