IDEAS ABOUT CHRONIC FATIGUE AND ITS IMPACT ON BEHAVIOUR IN NINETEENTH CENTURY AND AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Journal Title: Psychiatria i Psychoterapia - Year 2014, Vol 10, Issue 1

Abstract

Fatigue is an important clinical and theoretical issue due to its frequent occurrence and psychosocial consequences. This article provides a critical review of the classical literature on chronic fatigue resulted in both mental and physical experiences. On one hand, prolonged severe fatigue can be considered as one of symptoms accompanying various diseases of different etiology – psychiatric (e.g. depression, neurasthenia), somatic (e.g. some infections) and neurologic (e.g. sclerosis multiplex, myasthenia gravis). On the other, it can be seen as an isolated set of symptoms of unknown origin called the chronic fatigue syndrome. The difficulties related to the definition of the fatigue cause problems concerning its taxonomy. The development of the fatigue-related physiological concepts are presented. Key neuropsychiatric and psychological mechanisms of chronic fatigue are discussed as well. Both classical and contemporary literature are reviewed with special emphasis on some fundamental issues, such as fatigue seen in neuropsychiatric practice, fatigue from the psychological perspective, fatigue as the dilemma of the education system as well as fatigue as a result of work. Directions for future research are outlined.
