Identification and Association of Factors Responsible for Substance use Disorder among Cases Reporting to Psychiatric Out-Patient Department of A Tertiary Care Public Hospital.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors responsible for substance use disorder and their association among cases reporting to Psychiatric Outpatient Department of a tertiary care public hospital. STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional study. PLACE AND DURATION: Out-patient Department (OPD), Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi, from 10th April 2016 to 9th October 2016. METHODOLOGY: The sample was taken with non-probability (convenient) sampling technique. Patients who were consulted for treatment of substance use were interviewed and examined by consultant / trainee psychiatrists. Substance use disorder was labeled to those who fulfilled the ICD-10 criteria. Factors responsible for substance use behavior were assessed by using semi-structured proforma. RESULTS: Amongst total of 207 cases with average age of 28.22 ± 7.159 years, predominantly males as 94.7% while only 5.30% were females. Familial and social factors responsible for substance use disorder were statistically significant such as family conflict 61%, family history of substance use 28% and family management problems 46%, poor parent-child relationship 26.57%. Social factors such as low socioeconomic status 47.7%, friends involved in using substance 56%, bullying 14% and poverty 58% were prevalent and significantly associated. CONCLUSION: Familial, social and individual factors are important as causative agents for initiation of substance use disorder.
