Identification of anxiety and attitudes of nursing students for doing scientific research

Abstract

This study was performed to determine the concerns and attitudes of nursing students for scientific research.The universe of this descriptive and cross-sectional study was composed of the students who were studying during 2016-2017 academic year in the department of nursing of a university located in the northwest of Turkey. The sample of the study included 162 students who were determined by using sample calculation formula with a known universe (confidence interval of 95%, an error rate of 5% and an incidence of 50%). Data of the study were collected by Student Descriptive Information Form, Anxiety Scale for Research and Attitude Scale for Scientific Research between February 15-March 17, 2017. Standard deviation, student t test and kolmogorov-smirnov test were used to assess data. It was found that the students have taken a score of 135.70±28.34 from attitude scale for research, meaning that their attitudes towards research were positive. It was also observed that the attitudes of the ones who were following periodicals, who were reading scientific studies and who were attending scientific meetings were more positive for doing scientific research compared to the others; and these results were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). Mean score of the students from anxiety scale was found to be at a moderate level (32.09±6.38). In the study, it was concluded that anxiety state of the nursing students for doing scientific research was at a moderate level and their attitudes were positive.
