Abstract
Wreck W-27 is apart from W-6 „Solen”, W-5 „Miedziowiec” and W-32 „General Carleton of Whitby” one of five most import ant sites researched Central Maritime Museum in Gdansk. It was discovered in 1985 year and at this time archaeological excavations were carried out at interval until 2001, recently the work was continued in years 2004–2006. Substantial quantities of the archaeological items and the elements of the stern were located within a large distance from the main wreck construction. The site covers the area of 2000 m2. Wreck is located in Gdansk Bay, at a depth 26 m. The construction of the wreck consist of a keel – 26 m long, 31 floor timber, planking, keelson – 17 m long with a mast step and 7-metre helm. During all (13) excavation seasons over 10 000 items were discovered. Among other things they include elements of the rigging, arms, ceramic and glass pottery, personal items of the crew, consumption utensils and accessories, pipes and other. The most interesting ones include: an almost completed oktant, telescope, two swivel guns and a cast-iron heavy gun. Wreck was a flat bottom cargo ship a ca 30 m long, probably kuff or galiot type. Some items from the wreck and construction elements like ornament of the helm head in a form of the clover leaf indicated that this was a Dutch vessel. Based on analise of coins and lead seal was assumed that the ship sank at the end of the XVIIIth century, probably after 1791.
