Impact of Pharmacist-Led Continuous Education on the Knowledge of Inhalation Technique in Asthma and COPD patients

Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

Background:A key to the success of asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treatment is proper inhalational technique. A study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge on inhaler usage and to assess the impact of continuous education on the improvement of inhaler use in Asthma and COPD patients. Materials and Methods:110 patients prescribed with inhalation medications were divided randomly into Group I and Group II as 55 patients in each. On their first visit, both were asked to demonstrate the inhalation technique and were educated on the proper use of inhalers. Group I was subjected to extensive follow up every 15 days for three months. Group II was followed up after three months of their first visit. Both groups were subjected to spirometry during the first and last visits and Peak Expiratory Flow Rate during every visit. The relationship between knowledge of inhalation therapy and health status was assessed by a self developed and validated questionnaire and the results were analyzed statistically. Results: There was a significant increase in mean inhalation technique evaluation score from baseline to last visit in Group I patients than Group II patients. A statistically significant improvement in the FEV1 and PEFR values were obtained from the baseline to the last visit in both the groups but the improvement was more in Group I. Conclusion: Continuous education on proper inhalation technique had proven to be beneficial in improving the inhalation technique of the patients, relief of symptoms and improved lung function.
