Impact of Selenium Deficiency Compensation on the Efficacy of Treatment for Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in Patients with Thyropathy

Abstract

The objective of the study was comparative analysis of the impact of selenium deficiency and its compensation on thyroid status and efficacy of antituberculosis chemotherapy in patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis and thyropathy. In the article we have analyzed the results of comparative study of thyroid status, level of selenium in the blood before and at the end of intensive chemotherapy, as well as the efficacy of the treatment in 30 patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis and thyropathy on the background of standardized chemotherapy and in 30 patients with the same comorbidity, who received standardized chemotherapy in combination with sodium selenite. We have observed the decrease in the levels of free thyroxine and selenium and increased levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone in blood plasma in both groups of patients before the treatment. The compensation of selenium deficiency increased the level of free thyroxine in the study group. In the control group, further decline of thyroid function under the influence of antituberculosis drugs was found in 8 months of the chemotherapy. Conclusions. Parameters of the efficacy of antituberculosis chemotherapy were higher in patients received sodium selenite.
