IMPACT OF SMALL GROUP TUTORIALS IN PHYSIOLOGY ON 1ST YEAR MBBS STUDENTS

Journal Title: International Journal of Basic and Applied Physiology - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Weekly Small Group Tutorials (SGTs) are being used in Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, to assess the effectiveness of lectures on knowledge delivery in Physiology and forms one of the tools of formative assessment for the undergraduate students. Presently, a significant 15-20% of an academic term is being slotted for it. Considering time-constraints in delivering the vast information in this discipline, there is a need to find out the impact and utility of the present form of SGTs on the students. Aims & Objectives: To study the impact and effectiveness of routine tutorials on the students in enhancing knowledge delivery & understanding of Physiology in RIMS, Imphal. Materials and Methods: Anonymous feedback Questionnaires from 95 students in 1st year MBBS were obtained after exposure to existing tutorials in Physiology and analysed using descriptive statistical tools. Results: Students responded positively to almost all aspects regarding the present form of tutorial. They create reflective learners, increase amount of study time & improves study strategy. Self-confidence is enforced and they help students who needed more than the ‘in-class' discussion time to master the subject. They increase understanding of a topic through its verbalization, concretize concepts and promote better retention. However, the current interactions time as well as tutor's attitude during tutorials especially their tendency to reinforce importance of memorization as the ultimate way to learn attracted negative responses. Conclusions: The study concludes that the present form of tutorial is an effective means of supplementing lecture classes and improves students' learning and performances. Even then, specific modifications are called for to make it more interactive.
