Importance of zinc for the human body in the aspect of zinc supplementation

Journal Title: Annales Academiae Medicae Silesiensis - Year 2017, Vol 71, Issue

Abstract

Zinc is one of main trace elements of the body, that plays a catalytic, structural and control role. It is essential for cell division and the differentiation of arising cells, it is involved in homeostasis, immunological reactions, in apoptosis and ageing of the body. Zinc is also an element of many enzymes and proteins, and it is important in the spermatogenesis and synthesis of steroidal hormones as well as. About 30% of the world’s population suffers from an insufficient supply of zinc. Apart from an insufficient supply from food, some diseases and abnormal absorption of this element can be a cause of zinc deficiency. Diseases resulting from zinc deficiency may appear both in children and adults. Dietary supplementation of zinc preparations in many cases is necessary, but its independent use, without a proven deficiency and without consulting a doctor, may lead to the appearance of adverse effects as a result of abuse, including dangerous interactions with other applied preparations and food.
