Improving salinity tolerance in an open-pollinated sugar beet population

Journal Title: International Journal of Farming and Allied Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 6

Abstract

Salinity is an ever-present threat to crop yields, especially in countries like Iran where irrigation is an essential aid to agriculture. In this study, quantity and quality characters of 10 sugar beet breeding populations along with two controls were investigated under low and severe salt stress and non-stress conditions at the experimental station of Sugar Beet Seed Institute (SBSI) in Mian-Doab, Iran in 2012. The layout of field experiment was a randomized complete block design with three replications. Electrical conductivity (EC) was higher than 18 mmohs/cm in severe salt stress and about 11 mmohs/cm in low stress conditions. Several characteristics such as root yield (RY), white sugar yield (WSY), sugar content (SC) and impurities (Na, K and N) were determined in both stress and non-stress conditions. The analysis of variance showed significant differences among the breeding populations for most traits. Both salt stress conditions influenced the quantity and quality characters of the breeding materials. In general, salinity stress conditions decreased RY and WSY.However, SC was increased as compared with non- stress conditions. The genotype 5 was found to be superior to the other genotypes whose pollinator parent can used in the subsequent sugar beet breeding programs.
