IN MULTI- PARTY PERIOD AN EXAMPLE ELECTIONS IN ESATERN TURKEY: SIIRT ELECTIONS AND DEMOCRAT PARTY DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES (1950- 1960)

Abstract

In Turkey, together with the end of World War II multiparty political life has begun, establishing Democrat Party one-party rule is replaced by a pluralist structure. However, both the Republican People’s Party and the Democrat Party, for the organization at a later date in Siirt, political activity in the city proceed slowly and the difficulties it has been seen in contrast to the whole country in the coming years. 1950 General Election is a turning point for the Republic of Turkey. As a result of these elections, govern the country alone for 27 years, Republican People’s Party, has become opposition position. During this period, in social and economic areas progress has been achieved, Siirt also received share of it. As a result, the Democrat Party has won 1950 and subsequent two general elections in Siirt. Until 1954 Elections, Democrat Party increased investment in Siirt, where in elections has increased its vote potential. The hopping of the Democrat Party this potential, sympathy of the people against the goverment as well as investments and religious leaders in the city have been effective. Republican People’s Party, with the approach of the 1957 Elections, followed by the open- air meeting in Siirt separated from the image it portrays politics in recent years, was given concrete promises to voters. As a result of the 1957 Elections, despite losing votes it resulted the victory of the Democrat Party.
