In vitro multiplication of the malanga clone 'Viequera' (Xanthosoma spp.) In semi-automated culture systems
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2012, Vol 12, Issue 2
Abstract
In Cuba, the Xanthosoma genus is highly demanded in the preference of the population in relation to other edible aroids. The temporary immersion system (TIS) may constitute a micropropagation alternative to obtain high quality seed in this crop. The effect of two Semi-automated Culture Systems (SIT) and Constant Immersion Systems (CIS) with aeration through continuous bubbling in culture medium during the multiplication stage of axillaries shoot buds was evaluated. Results allowed demonstrating superiority in the efficiency of SIT regarding CIS in the sprout multiplication of clone ‘Viequera’. Axillaries sprout buds cultivated in TIS showed the best results in the multiplication compared with CIS and the static culture system with passive renewal of the internal atmosphere was used as control. The culture conditions created in the temporary immersion system for in vitro multiplication of axillaries sprout buds achieved the highest multiplication coefficient (9.56). This in vitro culture system will allow increasing the multiplication coefficients in the micropropagation for seed production in this genus.

Use of potato microtubers cv. ‘Andinita’ obtained in temporary immersion systems to produce minitubers at greenhouse
The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the most important crops worldwide. Production of microtubers in temporary immersion systems represents a qualitative advance in obtaining planting material. This study aimed...
In vitro response of Phaseolus vulgaris L. seeds cultivar 'Ica Pijao' irradiated with different doses of Gamma radiation
The lower yields in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) worldwide is due primarily to abiotic factors. For this reason the search for tolerant varieties is one of the objectives of the breeding programs in this species....
Effect of Sodium Chloride on the in vitro development of cultivars 'Gran enano' and 'FHIA 03'
The effect of Sodium Chloride levels on in vitro development of Gran Enano (AAA) and `FHIA 03`(AABB) cultivars was determined. Researches were carried out at Instituto de Investigaciones en Viandas Tropicales (INIVIT)...
In vitro propagation of Pinus cubensis Griseb plants
Micropropagation of plants from the genus Pinus has been done in several species. However, micropropagation of Pinus cubensis Griseb has not been reported. This species has a great economical importance. Then, the aim...
Translating theory into practice for conservation of germplasm of recalcitrant-seeded species
Recalcitrant seeds, which are metabolically-active and desiccation-sensitive, can be stored in the short-term at non-injurious temperatures under conditions precluding dehydration, but associated problems include fungal...
