Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2005, Vol 1, Issue 6

Abstract

The AIM of this study was to investigate the incidenceof clefts of the palate in relationship to the age of mothers, order of birth, birth weight, birth place and affected firstdegree relatives.MATERIAL AND METHODS: The analysis includedinfants with a cleft of the palate born in 1998-1999 invoivodeship: dolnośląskie, kujawsko-pomorskie, lubelskie,łódzkie, pomorskie, warmińsko-mazurskie, wielkopolskie, zachodniopomorskie. Statistical analyses were carriedout using t-paired test and Fisher’s test. The influence ofqualitative variables on the incidence of clefts was analysedby log-line modelling. A p-value of less than 0.05 waschosen to assign statistical significance of all tests.RESULTS: It has been stated that the incidence or allclefts: syndromic and non-syndromic increased with theage of mothers. Clefts of the palate and the lip prevailed inthe first and second pregnancy. The birth weight of childrenwith syndromic and non-syndromic clefts of the palateis lower in all ranges of weight groups. The highestincidence of clefts of the palate was significantly more oftenstated in villages and less often in towns. In familieswith affected siblings the recurrence risk was 5.5% andsignificantly differed in families with affected parents.CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of clefts increaseswith the age of mothers, especially significant above 39years of age. The results suggest that in families with onechild affected with a cleft of the palate the recurrence riskfor the next child is higher. The results of the epidemiologicalstudy indicate an urgent need for prophylactic procedures.(Orthod. Forum 2005; 1:165-75)
