Increased frequency of the attacks after the treatment of interferon-alpha in a patient with benign multiple sclerosis
Journal Title: JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY MEDICINE - Year 2017, Vol 7, Issue 1
Abstract
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common cause of disability for the individuals between 20-40 years old after the trauma. Benign MS case are also known to exist, although rare. A 55-year-old female patient was admitted to our clinic with complaints of left arm numbness and loss of strength, dizziness, imbalance. She was diagnosed with MS and was treated with corticosteroids at the age of 35. She had no significant health problems for years, had any treatment since then. Two years ago, after the diagnosis of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, IFN-alpha (IFN-alpha) was started by gastroenterologists. During treatment, her complaints like numbness, balance problems were linked to the drugs. After a few days the treatment was terminated, she was admitted to our clinic with the complaints described above. Brain MRI revealed a large number of MS plaques that some of them were enhancing. Thus attack treatment was started. IFN-alpha is a molecule secreted by immune cells with antiviral, antiproliferative and immuno-modulatory effects. It was reported that fulminant MS had been developed in HCV patients due to the IFN-alpha therapy where the claim was that IFN-alpha could trigger the T cell-mediated tissue damage, or aggravate. Here, we drew attention to the increased attacks in a patient with benign MS after the IFN-alpha treatment. It is very important to carefully monitor the treatment of the other diseases that are co-exist or subsequently added to multiple sclerosis..
