INDIVIDUAL SPECIFICS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL INSIGHT OF INTERNALS AND EXTERNALS

Abstract
The article presents the results of the theoretical and empirical research aimed at revealing individual specifics of psychological insight of persons prone to internality in comparison with the representatives of the external type of locus of control. Localization of control is understood as a deep, stable element of personality self-regulation structure, as a capacity for self-development, self-realization, controlling one’s destiny, ensuring a high level of personal control in most situations. Psychological insight is considered from the standpoint of continuous-hierarchical concept of personality and understood as an integral complex property of personality which reflects the inner psychological world of another person and is manifested in the ability to quickly and accurately make judgments about other people, about their feelings, states, character traits, actions and even intentions. Among the indicators of psychological insight at the qualitative level of its structure the following properties have been studied: psychological vigilance, social intuition, focus on understanding other people, proneness to psychological interpretation, independence of judgments, impartiality, etc. Significant correlations between certain quality indicators of psychological insight and general internality have been found. It has been shown that representatives of the external locus of control group build the image of another person, basing mainly on their first impressions and authoritative persons’ opinion. Externals form their judgments about another person, about his/her feelings and states on the basis of their intuition, without any logical justification, and along with this they can make flexible, and at the same time, holistic vision of another person. Internals are able to make an adequate image of other people; they are characterized by impartiality, independence of judgments, and tolerance in evaluations. Representatives of this group as a rule analyze another person’s image in details and very often change and correct it in the process of communication. When comparing the characteristics of psychological insight of representatives from internal and external groups there hasn’t been found a traditional advantage of internal locus of control over external one. The disadvantages that have been diagnosed in externals are compensated by the development of other components of psychological insight. It is suggested that the specificity of psychological insight is caused not as much by individual’s responsibility as an aspect of locus of control, as by the specificity of searching for and processing the information about another person, which is ensured by that quality. The issue of psychological “rehabilitation” of the external type of locus of control, which is shown in the specific qualitative and quantitative combination of psychological insight, is the prospect of our further research.
