Infl uence of tissue pressure on central venous pressure/peripheral venous pressure correlation: An experimental report
Journal Title: World Journal of Emergency Medicine - Year 2011, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Peripheral venous pressure (PVP) has been shown to correlate with central venous pressure (CVP) in a number of reports. Few studies, however, have explored the relationship between tissue pressure (TP) and PVP/CVP correlation. METHODS: PVP and CVP were simultaneously recorded in a bench-top model of the venous circulation of the upper limb and in a single human volunteer after undergoing graded manipulation of tissue pressure surrounding the intervening venous conduit. Measures of correlation were determined below and above a point wherein absolute CVP exceeded TP. RESULTS: Greater correlation was observed between PVP and CVP when CVP exceeded TP in both models. Linear regression slope was 0.975 (95% CI: 0.959-0.990); r2 0.998 above tissue pressure 10 cmH2O vs. 0.393 (95% CI: 0.360-0.426); and r2 0.972 below 10 cmH2O at a fl ow rate of 2000 mL/h in the in vitro model. Linear regression slope was 0.839 (95% CI: 0.754-0.925); r2 0.933 above tissue pressure 10 mmHg vs. slope 0.238 (95% CI: −0.052-0.528); and r2 0.276 in the en vivo model. CONCLUSION: PVP more accurately refl ects CVP when absolute CVP values exceed tissue pressure.
Keeping nephrotic syndrome on the emergency department edema differential: A case report
Nephrotic syndrome is defined by the presence of peripheral edema, heavy proteinuria (greater than 3.5 g/24h), and hypoalbuminemia (less than 3 g/dL).[1] Nephrotic syndrome is relatively rare, with an incidence of 3 new...
Evaluating the management of anaphylaxis in US emergency departments: Guidelines vs. practice
BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis is characterized by acute episodes of potentially life-threatening symptoms that are often treated in the emergency setting. Current guidelines recommend: 1) quick diagnosis using standard criteri...
Effect of harmless acute pancreatitis score, red cell distribution width and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio on the mortality of patients with nontraumatic acute pancreatitis at the emergency department
BACKGROUND: Harmless acute pancreatitis score (HAPS), neutrophile/lymphocyte ratio and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) are used to determine the early prognosis of patients diagnosed with nontraumatic acute pancr...
Sudden cardiac death following blunt chest trauma: commotio cordis
BACKGROUND: There have been numerous reports of sudden cardiac death attributable to the condition of commotio cordis. Primarily, these are reports from the USA. Although three Australian cases have been mentioned in the...
