Influence of obstetric gel Dianatal on the course of labour and neonatal outcome in primiparous women

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 4

Abstract

Objective. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of the obstetric gel Dianatal on the course of labour, in terms of duration of the stages of labour, perineal integrity and condition of the newborn.Materials and methods. A total of 55 primiparas with singleton gestation at term were recruited. Ten women who eventually delivered by Cesarean section were excluded, and the remainder who underwent vaginal delivery were randomly assigned to two groups: Group 1 (N = 22) was treated with the obstetric gel Dianatal according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and Group 2 (controls, N = 23) delivered without obstetric gel.Results. There was no statistically significant difference between the analyzed groups concerning the total duration of labour (p=0.22) and the duration of Stage I of labour (p=0.37). In contrast, a significant reduction in the duration of Stage II in Group 1 was noted (p=0.01). Intact perineum was observed more frequently in Group 1 (45.45%) than in Group 2 (13.04%; p=0.04). Newborns delivered by Group 1 mothers had significantly higher Apgar scores at 1 minute and at 3 and 5 minutes than those delivered in Group 2.Conclusions. Systematic application of obstetric gel for vaginal delivery can result in substantial benefits for both the mother and child: it decreases the duration of Stage II of labour, reduces the number of perineal tears, and reflects in higher Apgar scores of newborn condition. Keywords: hydrogel, delivery, newborn
