Influence of pre-sowing red light stimulation on nutrients content in winter rape seeds II. Fatty acid content and composition

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2011, Vol 32, Issue 2

Abstract

Winter rape seeds have been examined to determine the content and composition of some fatty acids (C16:0, C16:1, C18:0, C18:1,C18:2, C18:3, C20:0, C20:1, C18:2/C18:3). The experimental factors included winter rape cultivars (Californium, Pomorzanin, Kronos, Spencer) and the pre-sowing stimulation of seeds with red light emitted by an electromagnetic wave generator (EWG).Within each cultivar, a control combination (unradiated) and three objects with 1-, 3- and 5-time radiation were distinguished. It was found that a cultivar and meteorological conditions had significant effect on fatty acids content and composition in winter rape seeds. A cultivar factor modified a content of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids chiefly in the seeds. The pre-sowing stimulation with red light radiation did not have any significant impact on fatty acids content or composition.Fatty acids composition was significantly affected by a cultivar and weather conditions. The cultivar factor modified primarily the content of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid (C18:3) as evidenced by the highest value of variation coefficient. The meteorological conditions primarily affected saturated fatty acids content, i.e. palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0) and arachidic (C20:0). Pre-sowing stimulation with red light only slightly modified the content of individual fatty acids in winter rape seeds of the issue generation.
