INFLUENCE OF THE CHRONIC STATE ON THE SELF-ATTITUDE OF THE PERSONALITY
Journal Title: Вісник Одеського національного університету. Психологія - Year 2017, Vol 22, Issue 3
Abstract
Shame is an adequate and useful function in people’s lives and their social relations, but it can also have rather negative consequences. Scientists distinguish between functional and dysfunctional shame. Ilyin attributes chronic shame to the kind of pretended shame as his neurotic form. Also, the sense of shame is a consequence and results from the absence of social contacts (Simonov), a negative assessment from others (Zimbardo). Many researchers point to the affinity of feelings of shame, fear and regret (guilt) (Sikorsky). W. James said that self-attitude is a component of self-consciousness of an individual, which performs the function of accepting the personality of itself and is examined in close connection with other components of the Self-concept, especially with the image and the picture of the Self. Self-attitude, according to various authors, has its own self-interest structure, autosimpation, self-esteem and other attitudes, self-confidence. Having analyzed the data, we reached the following findings. A high level of shame reduces self-interest and auto-sympathy. Manifestations of aggression in the situation of shame reduce auto-sympathy, self-acceptance and global self-adaptation, while projective mechanisms reduce self-accusation and increase auto-sympathy. On the other hand, shyness, in its adequate expression, has a positive effect on self-understanding, self-interest and self-esteem. Important factors of the self-attitude of a person with chronic shame are high levels of self-interest, emotions of interest and the mechanism of projection of shame on others, as well as low levels of self-excuse, feelings of guilt, high morality of behavior and tension. As for a healthy person, the level of self-attitude is primarily affected by the levels of its components.
