INGEBORG BACHMANN AND THE «HAUS ÖSTERREICH»: THE OVERCOMING OF BORDERS IN THE AUTHOR’S PROSE

Abstract

The theme of the study is correlation between the outstanding Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann and her concept «House of Austria» («Haus Österreich»), which is regarded as the overcoming of borders in the author’s prose. The subject of the investigation is the transformation of the phenomenon «Habsburg myth» into her own mental model the «House of Austria». The object of the study is the prose of I. Bachmann – the story Three Ways to the Lake (Drei Wege zum See, 1972) and the unfinished novel The Book Franza (Das Buch Franza, 1965-66). The aim of the article is to show the process of this transformation, using the well-known parts of myth in form of the main anthroponymies from the novel of J. Roth The Emperor’s Tomb (Die Kapuzinergruft, 1938) and of the fictional toponym Galicien. The methodological basis of the study consists of the productive ideas of biographical method, comparative study, space study and receptive poetics. The scientific innovation is the analysis of «House of Austria», which is oriented to the future, but not to the past. The results of this research can be used in further studies of the I. Bachmann’s prose and in the studies about Austrian literature of the 20th century. The conclusions of the analysis present, that the Bachmann’s concept contains some elements of utopia as a result of history’s study and is combined with the space of the former Danube Monarchy as the multicultural chronotopos with the nostalgic tinge.
