Insects as Animal Feed: A Review

Abstract

Fishmeal and soybean meal are currently the most protein source feed, but the costs of these conventional feed resources are very high and their availability in the future will be limited due to various reasons. This calls the need to develop alternative sources of protein which replace fishmeal and soymeal. With this regard, insects can be used as alternative feed resources which have a potential to replace fishmeal and soymeal. This is due to; insects contain high quality protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids which make them valuable protein sources for monogastric animals. Protein and amino acid digestibility of insects are also greater than many vegetable based proteins. Therefore, palatability of insects to animals is good and they can replace 25 to 100% of soymeal or fishmeal depending on animal species. However, presence of high levels of lipids in the insect meals can decrease fibre digestion in the rumen and not good for optimum rumen fermentation, and hence defatted insect meals would be an ideal choice for ruminants.
