Insights into Mechanisms of Doxorubicin Cardiotoxicity
Journal Title: Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology Advances - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
Doxorubicin (DOX) is an anthracycline antibiotic, which is currently one of the most effective and commonly used anti-neoplastic drugs in clinical practice. Unfortunately its use is restricted by dose-dependent cardiotoxicity, which frequently leads to irreversible cardiomyopathy and heart failure. It has been shown that free radicals and oxidative stress are involved in doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. The main goal of the current review is to report the latest findings regarding the mechanisms of doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity with respect to free radicals, DNA-damage, as well as some other parameters.
