Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 7, Issue 10
Abstract
intelligence is defined as an individual’s overall ability to understand their world and satisfy their expectations. Several studies indicate a relationship between socioeconomic factors and IQ levels. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of these factors on IQ levels in children. The current research was a case-control in which 222 female students aged 9-11 years (111 with low intelligence quotients as the case group and 111 with average intelligence quotients as the control group) were randomly chosen from public girls’ elementary schools in Bandar Anzali, Iran. General and demographic characteristics were gathered, and USDA household food insecurity questionnaires were completed by the students' mothers. Wechsler’s revised intelligence test was used to determine each student's intelligence quotient. The acquired data was analyzed in chisquare 2, student t-test, SPSS (16.0 version), and Stata 11 SE. The results of univariate logistic regression showed a significant association with children with IQs of position or level of education, household economic status and the number of people employed, households. But there was not significant relationship between the mother and child's weight and height and also father employment, home ownership and family members. As the results showed multivariate logistic regression , the odds of having children with lower IQs than non- college -educated mothers and fathers , respectively, are over than 2 and 3.5 times rather than the parents had a university education , more attention is essential to socioeconomic status - household and provide the appropriate context for promoting education and awareness of parents about IQ loss in children less.
