Interface of SiCf/Ti-matrix composites

Abstract

SiC fiber reinforced Ti-matrix composites are important materials for the application in aerospace. However, the interfacial reaction between fiber and matrix degenerates the mechanical properties of the composites. With the help of transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, the interfacial reaction products are identified. And the interfacial reaction is analyzed based on thermal dynamics and kinetics. It is shown that different reaction products appear and distribute in several layers during the interfacial reaction in different composites. The interfacial reaction is controlled by diffusion but the reaction rate is not the same in different composites system. It is confirmed that both interfacial coating and matrix alloying are very important for decreasing the interfacial reaction.
