Interleukins in Periodontal Health and Disease

Journal Title: Indian Journal of Dental Advancements - Year 2016, Vol 8, Issue 1

Abstract

Periodontal diseases, a series of infections of the periodontal tissues which eventually can lead to loss of teeth, are form of aberrant inflammation. The release of inflammatory mediators and cytokines as local host response to the periodontopathic bacteria appears to play crucial role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases Interleukins are a large group of immunomodulatory proteins that elicit a wide variety of responses in cells and tissues . Interleukins function in a paracrine or autocrine fashion, rather than as an endocrine signal, which is more common with steroidal and amino acidderived hormones. Thus, the investigation of interleukins responses to periodontal diseases is at the forefront of the translational research agenda in oral science. This review summarizes interleukin expression in periodontal tissues and its importance in tissue homeostasis and, in particular, in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases.
