Investigate of Prospective Mathematics Teachers' Teaching Strategy Knowledge in the Context of the Surface Area and Volume
Journal Title: International Journal of Educational Studies in Mathematics (IJESIM) - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the knowledge of teaching strategies of the prospective teachers of mathematics for elementary in relevance with the surface areas and volumes of geometric objects. The case study method was used in this study in which the qualitative research approach was adopted. The participants of the study are constituted 6 prospective elementary mathematics teachers studying at the 3rd grade of the faculty of education of a state university in Turkey. when the data of the study were collected, the semi-structured observation form prepared by Gökkurt (2014) for teaching strategies on geometric subjects for the prospective teachers of mathematics for elementary was used. The data of study were analyzed by the descriptive analysis technique. In this context, in accordance with the logic of descriptive analysis in the study, the items in the observation form were used as codes, and quotations were made from the observation data in order to describe and present the strategic knowledge of prospective teachers more in-depth. When the analyzed data are examined, it is concluded that prospective teachers' knowledge of teaching strategies is sufficient in general but the application of this knowledge is not at the desired level.
