Investigation of Ionospheric Mapping Function Error for GAGAN Application

Abstract

The positional accuracy of Indian Space Based Augmentation System known as GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) suffers from atmospheric errors which include large gradients, intense irregularities and equatorial anomaly conditions etc. The modeling of the predominant ionospheric error also depends on role of the thin-shell Mapping Function (MF) in Grid based Techniques. The input to these grid based models is vertical delay data. The MF play a vital role of converting slant Total Electron Content (TEC) data of IPPs to vertical and vertical TEC data back to slant delay at user IPP locations, in grid models. Hence, any amount of error introduced due to MF would amount to two fold and needs suitable modeling to improve integrity of the system. In this paper, the potential range errors introduced by the GAGAN thin-shell due to various mapping functions are analyzed. These investigations would be helpful for identifying a better MF for GAGAN application.
