Investigation of phenotypic distance of F1 CMS ogura winter oilseed rape hybrids and parental lines using multivariate statistical methods

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2009, Vol 30, Issue 2

Abstract

Breeding of oilseed rape cultivars in Poland is based on CMS ogura hybridization system. Effective selection of hybrid parental lines has decisive role in the advancement of hybrid breeding. The aim of this study was the multivariate treatment of variability of nineteen traits of eight F1 hybrids of winter oilseed rape and their parental forms. The multivariate analysis of variance and canonical variate analysis were used. The plant material consisted of 8 F1 hybrids of winter oilseed rape (4 non-restored — Kaszub F1, Mazur F1, Pomorzanin F1, Lubusz F1 and 4 restored hybrids) and their parental lines: 8 paternal lines — 4 restorers, 4 without restorer gene and 5 CMS ogura lines. The experiments were carried out using randomized block design in four replications during two crop seasons of 2002–2003 and 2003–2004 in two localities Borowo and Zielęcin. Hybrids and parental forms were evaluated in respect to 6 morphological and 13 biochemical characters. Analysis of the data was performed using the statistical package GenStat v. 7.1.Multivariate analysis of variance showed significant differences of the investigated genotypes and expression of genotypes in locations and years of studies. In general, greater variation among genotypes was observed for experiments carried out in Borowo than in Zielęcin. The results of canonical variate analysis revealed differences between all the experimental objects in all environments. Statistically significant correlation was found for Mahalanobis distance obtained in different environments: for experiments in Borowo in the years 2003–2004 the correlation coefficient was r = 0.671, and in Zielęcin r = 0.451. In 2003, the correlation coefficient between the two ocalities was r = 0.663, one year later, r = 0.329. All correlation coefficients were statistically significant.Genotypes having the greatest genetic diversity can be used to create a gene pool of parental lines for the creation of high yielding hybrids of winter oilseed rape.
