The rapid developments in mobile technologies have resulted as the entry of new media in our daily lives. These tools provide a suitable ground, as well as the production of knowledge and the sharing of knowledge to be consumed. These social media tools can create an attractive environment for young people. According to statistics published by Turkish Statistical Institute and GlobalWebIndex, social media participation rate of young people is outstanding. Due to the attractive nature of these platforms for young people it is important that educators and policy makers evaluate the potential of this medium. Therefore it is necessary to reveal the pattern of use of this medium. Thus, this study aims to reveal the use of social media in Turkey based on the framework of social media literacy indicators. The results indicate that Internet access rate is reduced as the age increases. Young people have a high rate among the ones who have access to the Internet. Half of the population of Turkey has active social media accounts. Research data shows that social media environments are seen as a place for entertainment. Hence at the social media literacy education an approach called "fun approach" could be used in designing the curriculum.
