Journal Title: Turkish Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health - Year 2019, Vol 26, Issue 2

Abstract

Objectives: Adolescence is a period in which physical, cognitive, and emotional changes are seen, along with an increased susceptibility to stress. The aim of this study is to measure the psychometric properties of Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). Materials and Methods: Six hundred and eighty-seven adolescents (52% female, n=357) between 14 and 17 years of age participated the study. MAAS, the child’s depression ınventory, and strength and difficulties questionnaire self report form were used. The Cronbach alpha value was calculated and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed for MAAS. The predictive effects of mindfulness and other psychological variables on depression levels were assessed by binary regression analysis. Results: The Cronbach alpha value of the MAAS showed that CFA and test-retest results were reliable measures for adolescents aged between 14 and 17 years. The levels of mindful awareness, attention deficit hyperacvitity disorder, emotional, behavioral and peer relationship problems, and social behavior skills were significantly associated with depression in the adolescent age group. Conclusion: In this study, it was shown that the psychometric properties of MAAS was good and it was a reliable scale in the adolescent population. Therapeutic interventions that increase mindfulness may be beneficial in the treatment of adolescent depression. It is thought that early recognition of problems of internalization and externalization seen during adolescence and effective intervention in these problems may have preventive effects on the development of depression.
