Abstract

Chess is a board game played by two people applying war tactics on a special board divided by squares with certain stones. Still refferred with strategy, intelligence, using the mind, this game continues to exist as a institutionalized sport today as it has been in the historical process. It must be because it has always been up-to-date throughout the history why works of arts called satranchnamah (literal work of chess) have been written on this game and its rules. The most important work of this genre which is inherited from Iranian literature to us belongs to Firdevsî-i Rûmî. His poetic-prose mixed work of 100 folios in 1503 is one of the first examples in our literature. Later works are generally seen to be inspired of this book. Ahmed Feyzi, who lived between the years 1839-1909 and one of religious scholars of last period of the Ottoman Empire, says to pen Satrançnâme-i Rüşdiyye with reference to two treatises in Arabic and Persian and does not mention the work of Firdevsî. However, there are significant similarities between these two works. In this study, resemblance of these two works in terms of subject, content and style although they were written in different centuries is explained; the thesis that Şatrancnâme-i Rüşdiyye of Ahmed Feyzi Efendi is written by plagiarizing from Şatrançnâme-i Kebîr of Firdevsî-i Rûmî is tried to be verified by comparing two Works.
