Isolation of phytochemicals from the bark of Cinnamomum Cassia and antidiabetic study in alloxan induced diabetic rats

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a potentially morbid condition with high prevalence worldwide thus the disease constitutes a major health concern. Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism and its pathogenesis involves both genetic and environmental factors. The search for compounds with novel properties to deal with the disease condition is still in progress. Cinnamon (Laureaceae) is a spice that is made from the inner bark of trees called Cinnamomum. But there are no more scientific reports available about the antidiabetic activity of this plant. Hence the study was carried out to ascertain the activity. Isolation of Umbelliferone and Hymecromone from ethanolic extract of Cinnamomum. The isolated phytochemicals were characterized by UV, IR, 1H-NMR 13C- NMR. Results from a clinical study suggest that Umbelliferone, Hymecromone and ethanolic extract were reduced the blood glucose levels and improved in the body gain appeared gradually after administration by the 12th day. Renal functions (blood urea, creatinine and total protein) showed significant improvement while Lipid profile (TC),Triglyceride TG, LDL-c and VLDL-c) were significantly lowered on all of the treated groups when compared with those untreated. Further biochemical investigations will be helpful this Cinnamomum as a therapeutic target in diabetes research.
