Abstract

Between the years 1918 and 1922 various parts of Anatolia began to be occupied by the Entente forces, social unity and solidarity was worn out and the people faced economic problems in a dramatic way. The Kuva-yi Milliye as the regional resistance forces had important shortcomings in obtaining a definite victory. In these extra ordinary conditions, the first parliament (Turkish Grand National Assembly-TGNA) was opened in Ankara thanks to Mustafa Kemal Pasha and his friends’ efforts and the public support in order to establish independence that the public hoped for and to minimize social difficulties. The deputies in the first TGNA that were selected and came from the various parts of the country worked hard and demonstrated a great example of fidelity in spite of the difficult economic and political conditions dominating in those times. Liberation movement was accomplished and eventually the first TGNA having legally built up the public independence in the context of international community got tired. Therefore it completed its duty with the devolvement to the second parliament in 1923. The staff that came after those from the first TGNA accomplishing independence could not indicate the same success in solving economic and some other social problems. Additionally in these years the economic and political tensions worldwide had adverse effects on Turkey. Turkey’s economy was struggling with serious problems from the beginning of 1940s. The most explicit bill was paid by the public living in hard life conditions. Those economic difficulties in the second term of the single-party years had also negatively influenced the deputies from the first TGNA. However, these deputies’ sacrifices for the public independence were not forgotten by the government and the deputies in need were provided with financial support as an example of fidelity. This study aims to examine the support given to these deputies in need between the years 1939 and 1949.
