Journal Title: Revista Romana de Studii Eurasiatice - Year 2005, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

After the Crimean War, the Unification of the Romanian Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia became a European problem and Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire was one of the diplomatic centers where the fate of the Romanian modern state was decided. Using archival documentation, the article analyzes the main discussions and arguments that developed between the representatives of the European Powers on the shores of the Bosporus concerning the Romanian question, focusing on the position adopted by the diplomats from Sardinia and Naples. The diplomatic reports of Luigi Mossi, Giacomo Durando and Targioni, now in the manuscript collection of the Romanian Academy, allow us to see what really went on backstage in the negotiations regarding the border between the Russian Empire and Moldova, after the retrocession to Moldova of the three counties in southern Bessarabia ceded by Russia, the status of the Şerpilor (Snakes) Island, the drafting of the fermans for the Ad-Hoc Assemblies, the activity of the European Commission, the positions taken by the Italian diplomats regarding the “crisis” in the summer of 1857, the falsification of elections in Moldavia, the problem of the foreign-born prince. Italian projects regarding the domestic organization of the principalities were also important.
