Jesienny pokarm uszatki Asio otus na Nizinie Mazowieckiej

Journal Title: KULON - Year 2017, Vol 22, Issue

Abstract

During autumn 2016, we analysed the diet composition of the Long-eared Owl Asio otus at 6 sites on the Mazowiecka Lowland (central Poland) that differed in the habitat characteristics. 2407 individuals (125-608 at a single site) and 13 mammalian species (8-11 at a single site) were recorded. The food composition was highly varied and included: common vole Microtus arvalis 36.7-63.9%, tundra vole M. oeconomus 0-18.7%, harvest mouse Micromys minutus 1.1-29.1%, field mouse 1.1-15.1%, European pine vole M. subterraneus 0-10.7%, and bank vole Myodes glareolus 0-6.9%. In total, Arvicolidae accounted for 47.7 to 78.5% and Muridae for 20.7-50.8%. Single individuals of the Eurasian pygmy shrew Sorex minutus, Natterer’s bat Myotis nattereri and field vole M. agrestis were also found. The observed variation in the food composition indicates that the Long-eared Owl is rather an opportunistic predator mostly hunting for common small prey present within its foraging range. The detection of rare prey species requires an analysis of a very large number of food samples.
