JOHN CAGE AND ANALYZE OF INTERPRETATIONS OF MUSIC OF CHANGES

Abstract
John Cage, one of the most prominent composers in the twentieth century, produced Music of Changes, a four-volume work for solo piano, in 1951. This work is the first known musical composition, in which the I Ching method (or Book of Changes) is applied and thus it is one of the most significant examples of his continual searches on new methods and techniques. The aim of this article is, besides giving information about John Cage, I Ching and Music of Changes, to analyze three interpretations of this work (realized by David Tudor, Martine Joste and Joseph Kubera) as well as the differences between the approaches of these performers.
