Journal Title: JOURNAL OF ADVANCED RESEARCH IN CONSTRUCTION AND URBAN ARCHITECTURE - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
The world has been facing large number of problems in the last few decades due to intense urban migration and with the “unplanned” development of cities. A consequence of the attempt to solve urban problems is the rise of the “Smart City” concept. Developments of Smart Cities focus on the most pressing needs and on the greatest opportunities to improve lives. The objective is to promote cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of ‘Smart’ Solutions. The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development and the idea is to look at compact areas, create a replicable model which will act like a light house to other aspiring cities. The Smart Cities Mission is meant to set examples that can be replicated both within and outside the Smart City, catalysing the creation of similar Smart Cities in various regions and parts of the country. Several technologies have been developed and tested in different fields for developing smart cities. These technologies tap a range of approaches - digital and information technologies, urban planning best practices, public-private partnerships, and policy change - to make a difference. Thus, this study highlights some key Technologies for smart cities. Technology has potential to enact real progress but also to wreak havoc. It all depends on those who use the data and to what ends they pursue. Thus, some of the hazards due to smart cities are also highlighted in this study. It is expected that this study will be useful for developing smart cities in India.
