Kinetic - Catalytic Determination of Trace Cu (II) in Water Samples with Ortho Anisidine–Bromate Reaction

Abstract

The use of novel indicator reaction as applied to the kinetic determination of Cu (II) in water is investigated. The method relies on the catalytic effect of the analyte on the oxidation of Ortho – Anisidine (OA) by Bromate in acidic media. The extent of the reaction was followed spectrophotometrically at 420 nm by fixed time method (20 minutes). The optimization of the operating conditions regarding concentrations of the reagents, temperature and interferences are also investigated. The reaction was found to be first order in O-anisidine, Copper (II), and Bromate. The rate of the reaction is found to have an inverse dependence on hydrogen ion concentration. The pseudo-first order rate constants are determined at different temperatures were determined as a function of catalyst concentration. The detection limit and relative standard deviation for Cu(II) were 50 mol.dm-3 and 0.5% respectively. The coefficient of variance and % error were in the range of 0.998- 0.249, 0.2-0.25% respectively. Samples of river and wastewater from the Srikakulam district of Coastal Andhra were analyzed using the more sensitive reaction of OA. Results were compared to those obtained by the officially standardized methods. The analytical results obtained were satisfactory even for an untreated sample
